Information about St. Amelia
Commemorated on May 8th
Troparion (Tone 1)
Through thee the divine likeness was securely preserved, O Mother
Emmelia; for thou didst carry the cross and follow Christ. By
example and precept thou didst teach us to ignore the body because
it is perishable, and to attend to the concerns of the undying
soul. Therefore, doth thy soul rejoice with the angels.
She was the mother of St Basil the Great, St. Macrina, St. Gregory
of Nyssa and St. Peter of Sebaste. She had wanted to remain a
life-long virgin, but was forced to marry. She bore nine children,
and so thoroughly grounded them in Christian discipleship that at
least four became recognized Saints in the Church. She founded a
monastery in her old age, where she lived with her daughter
Macrina, and where she entered into rest in the Lord on May 8th,
375.
